The idea of a personal aroma stick or inhaler was limited to one for nasal congestion. Most of us remember the inhalers for colds and flu that everyone had in their medicine cabinet growing up.
However, thinking out-the- box has inspired the development of innovative mini inhalers for many other common ailments. Inhaler sticks are personal, travel friendly, pocket sized and nifty. They are ideal for people who want access to aromas for their wellbeing without any hassle of using a burner or spray or other type of diffuser.
Inhalers are healthy and safe to use, and allow for a very personal inhalation of the essential oil vapour, whether you are looking for a calming effect, an energy boost or headache relief. The aroma that only you are inhaling affects no one around you and the oils in the inhaler will determine the beneficial effect.
How Inhalers work
A natural fibre, dentist’s cotton wool, is soaked in the essential oil and inserted into the inhaler so there are no toxic fumes when the aroma is inhaled. They last for a year or more when the cap is tightly screwed on after use, with the potency diminishing according to use.
The first cranial nerve is the olfactory nerve, the nerve of smell, which has its nerve endings at the top of the inside of our noses. It is the only nerve exposed and is the most primitive nerve (common to many animals). It is connected to the primitive part of the brain, the limbic system that influences our feelings, emotions and thoughts.
Inhaling essential oils has an effect within a few moments lasting a few minutes or longer, bringing an instant action whether it is calming or stimulating. Recent studies have shown that certain aromas help for headache relief acting as mild analgesics. Other studies with inhaler sticks during chemo either for stress or for nausea are also shown to be beneficial.
