The Aromatic Apothecary premixed bath & massage oils are made up of essential oils diluted or blended into a carrier or base oil. The essential oils are concentrated extracts from plants that are effective in minute amounts – a few drops is all that is required to make a difference or cause an effect.
WHY USE A CARRIER OIL?
Essential oils applied in drop form to the skin could cause an irritation and the area of contact would be minimal. To this end it is easier to apply them to our bodies when they are blended into a non-volatile base or carrier oil which allows for the spread of the essential oil in minuscule quantities over the area of skin to which the diluted or blended oil is applied. The essential oil is therefore rendered non- irritant as the molecules will be spread over a larger area than is possible in one or two drops neat. The carrier or base oil in which essential oils are blended into are best if they are natural and or of vegetable origin. These non-volatile or fixed oils spread easily and are readily absorbed into the skin.
HOW CAN ESSENTIAL OILS NOURISH THE SKIN?
The nourishing vitamin-rich, fatty constituents are able to penetrate the dermis, plumping up cell tissue, and providing elasticity to the collagen in the skin. This is what we term nourishing to the skin. This moisturizing action together with the properties of the essential oils used, provide effective remedies for skin conditions.
Geranium is balancing to the skin, whilst Neroli helps for burst capillaries in the dermis. Tea tree and Lavender soothe burnt skin, and Camomile is great for irritated dry skin. Detox oils such as juniper or lemon assist for water retention; Lemon has a styptic (halts bleeding) action whilst peppermint has a cooling and tingling effect.
