Essential oils are the essence of a plant, the essential hormone-like substance within a plant, the natural aromatic molecules that give a plant its characteristics.
When we as human beings use essential oils, they exert an effect on our metabolism on a physical level as well as aromatically via our olfactory (smell) system to trigger a response. It is important to take note that essential oils are concentrated extracts from aromatic plants and must be used with care. Topically they can be used sparingly in their neat form, or preferably diluted in a base oil or cream. Essential oils can also be used aromatically to inhale the aroma.

Commonly known as rose geranium, this oil is distilled from the leaves of the plant.
Benefits to the body: Geranium alleviates symptoms of dry or oily skin and is also effective on wounds. It soothes eczema and itchy skin, is helpful with shingles and other neurological skin conditions.
Benefits to the mind and soul: The effect on the mind is calming, balancing and helps alleviate nervous tension and stress. Being a balancer it is useful to alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause.
Lemon oil is extracted from the rind of the fruit and has a sharp lemon aroma.
Benefits to the body: An inexpensive and very useful essential oil, lemon oil has high antibacterial properties and is effective in gargles for sore throats. Lemon is also an immune stimulant and helps relieve chest infections and asthma. Topically it can be used for eczema and itchy bites provided it is well diluted. It is also a well-known styptic (stops bleeding of cuts and grazes) as well as a disinfectant.
Benefits to the mind and soul: Psychologically lemon oil stimulates the mind increasing the ability to concentrate and memorise.
Lavender is the all-purpose, must have, do-everything oil.
Benefits to the body: It is versatile and safe to use on the skin unlike most other oils. Lavender oil heals burns, bites and stings, is helpful for muscle tension, and rheumatic pain and tension. Lavender can also be used as an antiseptic for colds, flu and bronchitis
Benefits to the mind and soul: When inhaled, lavender helps to reduce stress, and alleviate insomnia and irritability. It is calming, soothing, and good for high blood pressure and can be inhaled or used like a balm to relieve headaches.
Neroli oil is extracted from orange blossom, an expensive oil since the orange blossom only flowers once a year.
Benefits to the body: Neroli is suitable for all skin types specifically for broken capillaries and to smooth aging skin.
Benefits to the mind and soul: Neroli’s specific rich aroma has a powerful psychological effect and when inhaled reduces anxiety and shock. The sweet scent reaches deep into the soul to ease exhaustion bringing relief.
If you already love the taste of peppermint, you’re sure to adore the crisply invigorating aroma.
Benefits to the body: Used for its aroma it can be inhaled to remedy acute dizzy spells, shock and general weakness. When inhaled it also treats headaches, nausea and motion sickness. Topically, peppermint oil can be used as a chest rub for respiratory problems working as an expectorant and decongestant. Peppermint also soothes tired and sore feet, and cools inflamed muscles, painful joints, bruises and injuries. Peppermint also soothes itchy bites and revives tired skin.
Benefits to the mind and soul: Peppermint’s soothing nature helps reduce stress in the mind and provides relief from depression and mental exhaustion, restlessness and anxiety.
Caution – peppermint must be used sparingly.
